Ingredients:

  • 2 cups canned chickpeas (or soak 1 cup dried chickpeas overnight and boil until tender)
  • 2 tablespoons oil
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon ginger garlic paste
  • 2 large tomatoes, pureed or finely chopped
  • 1 green chili, slit (optional, adjust to taste)
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon red chili powder (adjust to taste)
  • 1-2 teaspoons garam masala
  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 1-2 cups water (as needed for desired consistency)
  • Fresh coriander leaves for garnish

Kitchen Tools Needed:

  • Pan or pot
  • Blender (if pureeing tomatoes)

Preparation Steps:

Prepare Chickpeas:
  • If using canned chickpeas, rinse and drain them. If using dried chickpeas, soak them overnight and then boil until tender.
Cook Onions and Spices:
  • Heat oil in a pan. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter.
  • Add chopped onions and sauté until they turn golden brown.
  • Add ginger garlic paste and green chili, and cook for a couple of minutes.

Add Tomatoes and Dry Spices:

  • Add the pureed or chopped tomatoes to the pan.
  • Add turmeric, red chili powder, coriander powder, and salt. Cook until the tomatoes are well cooked and oil starts to leave the sides of the pan.

Add Chickpeas:

  • Add the chickpeas to the pan and mix well.
  • Add water to get the desired consistency and bring to a boil.
  • Lower the heat and simmer for about 10-15 minutes.

Final Touch:

  • Add garam masala and simmer for another 5 minutes.
  • Adjust seasoning if needed.

Garnish and Serve:

  • Garnish with fresh coriander leaves.
  • Serve hot with rice, naan, or roti.

Tips for Beginners:

  • Chickpeas: Canned chickpeas are a great shortcut, but you can also use dried chickpeas for a more authentic taste.
  • Consistency: Adjust the amount of water based on whether you like a thicker or more soupy curry.
  • Spices: Feel free to adjust the spice levels to suit your taste.
